This year we decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day at Manna, a vegan restaurant in Primrose Hill. Manna marked its 50th Anniversary last year, originally opening as a pioneering vegetarian restaurant, but is now 100% vegan.
Overall, the prices were reasonable, considering the location, and we found the restaurant cosy and welcoming; the staff friendly and polite.
Starters were a little pricy compared to the mains. I tried the Cannellini Bean Slider: a mini burger served with spiced potato wedges. After having an arancini burger at Vegan Life Live the bar had been set high, but I was not left disappointed. The portion size was ample and the food flavoursome.
My partner chose the Vegetable Tempura, which was also delicious; I love vegetable tempura with sweet chilli dip, especially when the batter is so light and fluffy.
The Caribbean Platter was nice and spicy with a great combination of flavours, although the aromatic rice was a little on the dry side. Fortunately, the rest of the platter was so filling that I didn’t miss it. I enjoyed trying the jerk tofu, and the coleslaw was so tasty.
The organic bangers and mash were well presented but my partner felt they had overdone it with the amount of kale (I guess it depends if you’re a fan of kale – although the restaurant do change their veg, accordingly to what’s in season). The sausages were not quite to his taste, and overpowered by the fennel (but to be fair it is listed as one of the primary ingredients). Overall portion sizes were good.
We couldn’t squeeze in a dessert each so opted to share the Vice Cream and Cookie Semi-Freddo. Beautifully presented, the berries were divine, but the main part of the dessert was rock hard and needed a little excavation (if you wanted to eat it straight away – we couldn’t wait it looked so good). Plus point was that it made it last longer and was a tasty compliment to the rest of the meal.
